Eczema is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. Some experience eczema for only brief periods of time which may be seasonal while others may suffer chronic and persistent disease that may be emotionally disabling. Although the exact cause of eczema has not been fully elucidated, it is likely a complex interplay of environment and genetics which result in a defective skin barrier and altered immune response.
Eczema typically presents as red, itchy, and scaly skin that can be located anywhere on the body but common areas are the front of the legs, behind the knees, opposite side of the elbows, face and neck. On the hands and feet, eczema may appear as small tiny blisters that itch, crack and peel with deep fissures that can be painful and disabling in some cases. Small sores and erosions may also be present from severe scratching. If chronic, the skin can become leathered which can be difficult and slow to correct.
Although moisturizers are the mainstay for management, many patients require prescription topical steroids to control flares. For those that fail topical steroids, new biologic therapies have become available that have completely changed the landscape in the treatment of eczema.
